Nice – On 9 June 2025, Medusa Submarine Cable System had the privilege of participating in the Summit “For a More Connected Mediterranean”, convened in Nice at the invitation of French President Emmanuel Macron, on the sidelines of the third United Nations Ocean Conference.
This high-level gathering brought together Heads of State and Government from Croatia, Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Libya, Malta, Morocco, Portugal, Tunisia, the European Union, as well as representatives from international organizations, development banks, and major companies.
The summit highlighted the Mediterranean’s vital role as a hub for global maritime traffic — accounting for 25% of worldwide sea trade — and as a cornerstone for commercial, energy, and digital exchanges.
Medusa: Bridging the Digital Divide
Medusa Submarine Cable System is proud to be part of the EU’s flagship initiative to boost digital connectivity in the region. Our system — developed and operated by AFR-IX Telecom and supported by the European Union — is designed to bridge the digital divide between Europe and North Africa by connecting both shores of the Mediterranean and linking Southern Mediterranean countries among themselves.
Our submarine network leverages the latest advancements in fiber-optic technology, fully based on leading-edge European expertise, to deliver high-capacity, reliable connectivity. This initiative will not only enhance digital resilience but also contribute to regional development and innovation.
Strengthening Regional Connectivity
At the heart of the discussions was the shared goal of boosting sustainable prosperity through improved connectivity between Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Gulf region. Participants announced a series of bilateral and regional partnerships to:
-
Develop new land and maritime routes;
-
Decarbonize major ports and the shipping sector;
-
Deploy cutting-edge submarine cable systems.
Moving Forward
At Medusa, we believe that connectivity is the backbone of economic growth and innovation. We are committed to working alongside governments, international partners, and industry stakeholders to build a greener, more digitally inclusive Mediterranean.
We extend our thanks to the French Presidency, the European Commission, and all participants for the opportunity to contribute to this important dialogue. Together, we are building a more connected and sustainable Mediterranean future.
