Medusa Submarine Cable System Lands in Bizerte, the first landing point in Africa

Bizerte, October 31. Medusa Submarine Cable System, the largest subsea telecommunications infrastructure in the Mediterranean, has successfully completed its landing in Bizerte, Tunisia. This strategic milestone marks a significant step forward in enhancing digital connectivity across the Mediterranean basin and strengthening Tunisia’s position as a regional digital hub.

The landing in Bizerte forms part of Medusa’s ambitious 8,760 km route connecting North Africa with Southern Europe through a high-capacity, carrier-neutral subsea cable system. Once in full operation, Medusa will provide unprecedented levels of resiliency, diversity, and terabit-scale bandwidth to support the region’s rapidly growing demand for international connectivity.

In his address, Mr. Lassâad Ben Dhiab, Chairman and CEO of Tunisie Telecom, stated: “The landing of the Medusa cable in Bizerte marks a major technological milestone for Tunisie Telecom and for Tunisia. With this next-generation infrastructure, we are increasing our international capacity eightfold, thereby strengthening the reliability and security of our data exchanges.

This project, carried out alongside Medusa Submarine Cable System and supported by the European Union, illustrates our commitment to sustainably connecting territories and accelerating the country’s digital transformation.”

For his part, Mr. Norman Albi, CEO of Medusa, emphasized: “The arrival of the Medusa submarine cable system in Tunisia represents an important step toward achieving our shared goal of a more connected and competitive Mediterranean region. By working closely with our local partners, we are strengthening intercontinental links and laying the foundation for sustainable economic growth and innovation across the region.”

Giuseppe Perrone, Ambassador of the European Union, stated: “Through the Global Gateway initiative, the European Union supports the creation of concrete digital bridges between our continents. MEDUSA symbolizes this modern Euro-African partnership, built on connectivity, innovation, and the shared values of sustainable development.”
